The Good
Against All Odds could be compared to a very high powered scout rifle, and should be used as such.
Thanks to the extremely high Impact, tied with Jolder’s Hammer, it is entirely possible to kill another Guardian in the Crucible with 3 headshots. In PvP you’ll hit for 61 to the body and 76 on the head.
This kind of power carries over to PvE where most normal enemies will die in a single headshot, leading to one of the most ammo efficient heavy weapons.
The high Impact is complimented by Field Scout, which boosts the magazine size from 26 to 50, from 300 to 600~ rounds per minute.
Persistence and Grenadier further help with the ability to conserve ammo and improve its crowd control capabilities. Persistence really isn’t as much help in PvP, but more on that below. With Grenadier, kills add 10% to grenade energy, allowing you to completely recharge it in just 5-8 kills.
As you’d expect with a high Impact weapon, the rate of fire is low. Against All Odds has the lowest rate of fire. For those that prefer the opposite archetype, they may consider this a bad thing, but it’s really not. The low rate of fire helps stabilize the weapon and offsets the recoil.
This machine gun really shines in the range department, with the highest base range of any machine gun. You can use this to your advantage and you’ll be rewarded for pacing your shots from a distance.

The Bad
It is not recommended to hold down the trigger for too long when using the weapon due to the extremely low stability. Thankfully the low rate of fire makes the stability much more manageable.
Furthermore, like all slow firing/hard hitting weapons, the penalty for missing a shot is much greater than missing a shot with a fast firing weapon, especially in the Crucible. It’s rate of fire is comparable to Jolder’s Hammer.
The reload speed is also below average, so you’ll want to pace yourself and your shots to make them count. It takes nearly 4.5 seconds to reload.
Linear Compensator and Field Choke are poor barrel choices, only slightly increasing the range and at the cost of stability.
Persistence is an OK perk, but really only helpful in PvE. In PvP, 90% of the time you should be killing your enemy in 3-7 shots, so Persistence isn’t going to be used at all. You need to at least hold down the trigger for half of the magazine to see any effect from that perk.

Conclusion
Featuring the highest Impact of all machine guns currently available, Against All Odds is akin to an automatic scout rifle with its low rate of fire, high damage per shot, and high accuracy.
All that damage comes at a price however, as the version purchasable from the Crucible quartermaster lacks any perks or modifications that help control the incredibly high recoil (besides Persistence).
Granted, the low rate of fire naturally helps to some degree to mitigate the recoil, but landing successive shots may prove difficult.
In short, this is an awesome machine gun for any style of play and it’s definitely worth buying.
For anyone who’s still using THE SWARM, this is a worthy replacement.
For PvP this weapon earns a 8.5/10 and for PvE a 8.6/10.
